Wayne and Ione Sherman

Wayne and Ione Sherman

For over 30 years, Wayne and Ione Sherman attended the Noon Concert Series at Schoolcraft College. Their love of music grew as a result of Wayne's youth back in Chicago. Like many young people growing up in the 1940s and '50s, Wayne worked at a number of part-time jobs, one of which was night auditor and bell boy at a Chicago Hotel.

To keep himself occupied and awake during the late-night hours, Wayne asked his supervisor if he could listen to the radio. His supervisor granted permission, but only if Wayne listened to the classical music station. Following instructions, Wayne began to listen to classical music throughout the nights and began a lifelong love, second only to his beloved wife, Ione.

Wayne's professional career took him from bell boy to airline industry executive with companies such as North Central, Republic and finally Northwest Airlines. Wayne worked his way up from baggage handler to station manager at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, all the while keeping the love of music a part of his, Ione's and their three children's lives.

Wayne passed away on January 8, 2019, preceded in death by his wonderful wife, yet his love of music never diminished. In their estate plan, Wayne and Ione instructed their family to create a fund benefiting the Music Department at Schoolcraft College and the Noon Concerts that they had enjoyed together.

To honor their parents' expectations, Terri Sherman Allen and Caryn Sherman Wilson have established a sizable fund that will provide others with the same experience that Wayne and Ione enjoyed. From bell boy to airline executive, Wayne's message is as resounding as the music he loved—planning can create an impact that we never dreamed we could make.
